I bought my Lenovo Yoga 900 quite expensive about 1450€ (2016). It worked perfectly with Linux and I was quite impressed with the machine. And since Lenovo is a mayor player in the corporate market I felt “safe”.
Summer 2018 it started behaving strange and I worried that EFI/bios had been corrupt or infected. I updated the machine with the latest BIOS firmware from their homepage.
Suddenly there were less options and less control of the machine. It is unclear whether it was a legit update from their homepage or a trojan.
I contacted the support and they informed my that my warranty had expired (after 2 years) and that they basically was uninterested in providing support. After a couple of mails they suggested making a restore of the computer and that it would reset the BIOS to the defaults. Since I’ve been using Linux and *BSD on the machine I had removed the restore partition (restore partitions on the computer is a fucking bad idea since it can be corrupted and infected when using the machine, windows or linux).
I now tried their DRDS(after hours spent looking for the right page on their fucking crappy site)
From what I gathered there was digital media downloadable for my specific machine. When submitting my computers serial number I was informed that there was no media for my specific machine, available for download and that I would contact the support. I contacted the support and they directed my to Medion (this fantastic and wonderful, competent, techie organisation) I got a price for about 40€ for the restore medium. I got pissed for their unprofessional behaviour and the deep incompetence shown. I had to work with what I had yet pissed everytime I used my crippled computer.
Summer 2019. Thunderstorms and shitty weather in June. Used the computer during the evening, the following morning it would not start.
Fuck. I was certain that the computer had fried the only life I got from the machine was the power led and that it reacted to the charger. I tried stuff suggested on different sites. Holding the power button for a minute and so on. Nothing worked.
I had to contact the support and got tips from them, that didn’t work. I decided to send it to Medion (theese guys are just fucking fantastic) for evaluation. After a couple of days I was informed that. CPU, motherboard and harddrive was fried and that it would cost about 1550€ to repair it. I believed them. The thunderstorm had probably ruined my crippled, yet previously, responsive machine. I contacted my insurance company and decided to buy a new machine. Sadly. Since the machine was quite enough for my needs. The insurance company asked me to send them the faulty device for evaluation/recycling (they always to this from what I gather)
I got the machine from “Medium” and was ready to pass it on to my insurance company. But what the hack. I unpacked it connected the charger and tried. It started. Everything worked, hdd, mb, memory, touch-screen. Just as it had before the thunderstorm. Probably the CMOS-battery had lost it’s charge and reset the machine. I don’t think they even bothered to open up the machine. They obviously deemed perfectly working components as faulty. This is not som intermittent shit(it works all the time now). This is the work of incompetent, fucking liars selling returned computers and makes a nice profit. (hard to find any other explanation to their behaviour. not only incompetence)
Btw. I also use Motorola and their support is also lousy.
Lessons learned.
For me: Stay the fuck away from Lenovo and it’s affiliates.
For Lenovo: Be market leaders in corporate environments, then surround yourself with morons and watch everything fall. Accuse your customers for being “hard” and liars then cry as the ground comes rushing to you.
You guys
Are retarded
